Great Egret

This large bird can be found in ditches by the road , on small islands, and around fishing boats. Great egrets are common birds and are recognized for their elegant appearance. Interesting fact; During the 19th century these beautiful birds were once hunted close to extinction for the plumes the males grew during mating season. Today there are laws in place protecting these great birds (and many other bird types) but it is a weird thought how close we were to loosing such an alluring creature.
